Managing Design at eBay IT

The Hub and Passport are two independent products across four platforms (desktop web, mWeb, iOS & Android). Through late 2018 I directed a move for our 6 strong design team away from our existing tool set (Sketch & InVision) across to Figma to improve management of design and collaboration within the team.

We were finding the Sketch / InVision overly cumbersome to iterate rapidly and keep things in sync.

Migrating over to Figma forced us to rebuild all our design files, go through everything with a fine tooth comb and create process for ongoing updates.

Mobile

For our mobile app a handful of files keep everything glued together. A single design file, hosting all screens, and a library for each platform.

We manage a separate space for developing out features and explorations. Our approach varies depending on the feature being built but typically we start in Figma, sketching out flows and initial screens to develop out the concepts.

Passport Libraries

Our approach to a design system was to keep every interaction and UI element as aligned as possible across iOS and Android, but respecting platform specifics including things like system fonts, specific interaction guidelines or UI implementations.

Desktop and mWeb

Our Hub platform reached a good point of maturity before we switched to Figma so it's seen less attention from a design standpoint. The UI is in robust in code and we typically aren't adding many more components. We evolve it and do clean up whenever we explore new functionality, keeping the overall system and designs up to date.
